Diddy Kong Racing is a Kart Racing Kongquest | PostMesmeric
Diddy Kong Racing marked a moment. With gaming entering a fresh generation with a whole new dimension in tow, it was time to bring the Kong name to the Nintendo 64. But Rare did not open the gates for Donkey Kong with a platformer, but instead brought the simian sidekick Diddy Kong and his team of friends and rivals to kart racing in 3D. Time for a Diddy Kong Racing retrospective for Donkey Kong Month 2024!

Finding the True Form of Scorn | PostMesmeric

The 2022 horror game Scorn had both a complicated development and a controversial release. With Giger and Beksiński as immediate aesthetic influences, it was bound to make a bloody mark on horror gaming, but even a year later, my perspective on the game remains oddly confused. This is my attempt to uncover what could realize Scorn's potential, but that's admittedly a bigger challenge than I ini...

It's taken a long time for me to finally dive into the Shu Takumi gem that is Ghost Trick Phantom Detective. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze had Retro Studios returning (once again) to the Donkey Kong Country franchise, but this time to controversial reception. Was a new Metroid game from the developers really out of the question? Regardless, Retro Studios continued to refine the Donkey Kong series, making one of the best platformers of that age and bringing so much motion and energy to the franch...

The soundtrack of Katamari Damacy has become one of the most appreciated collections of game music of the new millennium, but why exactly is that? Is it the catchiness? The variety? Why does this excellent game not get the same level of nostalgic examination as those games?...

Still watching the video as of typing this, but one of the main turn-offs for me with Rain Code is definitely Shinigami. I adore her designs a *lot* and honestly her English VA's performance carries the character. But in writing? It's like... They don't have a clear idea on what they want her to *be.* On one hand, they want you to like her because she cares a lot about Yuma and is supportive of him. She's wacky and blunt, but ultimately well-meaning. On the other hand though, they want her to fill in the same role as Monokuma: Mascot character that's a dick to everybody (including Yuma sometimes) just for the silliness of it. Those two opposing character archetypes just *do not work* simultaneously for a single character. By having Shinigame flip-flop between them the entire game, you're sort of just left with a disingenuous dick with tits who doesn't leave you alone because plot. She's polarizing, but not in a fun way like Monokuma. She's barely above the Monokubs, and that's already a low bar to start with.

honestly, for the barrels.... yeah if they removed the faces from the "skill barrels" they could have had multiple puzzles/bananas in the same area and just "figure out what you need to do yourself" but as a kid I loved this game.... I 1001%ed DK64, before I 100%ed Banjo-Kazzoie, though after I 100%ed Tooie lol

I loved it. I went out of my way a few years back to clear every space which was nerve wracking near the end. The Grunty spaces are my only gripe, just because of how much I’ve played the game and the way they change each run. Identifying sounds and music has always been something I liked so, never really minded that. I much prefer it over Tooie’s silly quiz. I would have rather fought Grunty’s sisters.

The only thing I hated in Rain Code is how they killed-off the first 5 detectives we meet. I mean almost 70% OF the trailers had scenes of them to the point I thought they were the main cast who we gonna work with, but NOPE! Not only their screen time was short, they also had nothing to do with the plot. I do love the game in general, annoys me what they decided to do with those 5, going the Danganronpa style, although I liked the other 4 that we ended up working with in each chapter, I would really prefer if it was the other 5, in fact I prefer it if all 9 were involved.

can I say THE FUCKING FORESHADOWING IN THE PROLOGUE?!?! all the bodies were burnt leaving no blood, and the one time blood was shown, it WAS red. but because every other body had pink blood and the prior knowledge that it's canonically still red in danganronpa we simply ignore the red blood as a mistake or fluke. even when the detectives briefly call it out we're given an answer from the citizens that don't give an answer that makes sense if the color was the weird part so we just completely forget about the blood on the lock! THAT WAS SO FUCKING COOL THEY REALLY PULLED A FAST ONE ON US!

I play ghost of Tsushima a lot and red dead redemption alongside other games with the same sort of open world’s. And if I don’t play some missions or side quests in a certain order or it isn’t the right type of day or I don’t know which outfit to pick for the character than I will have to restart the whole game until everything is in the exact order I need them to be. And it’s hell when you know you can just finish the game in a week but sometimes it takes me years before I can actually complete a simple game. Which is hell to go through considering other’s have completed way long ago before you have. 😔

I dunno I love the Silver Coin Challenges, I couldn’t get enough, I would have been happy with even more extra challenges! The game was so much fun to play, I actually don’t have any criticism for this game. I never fully understood the complaint of it being repetitive, the very nature of kart racers is to play the levels multiples times anyway no? If anything those extra challenges give you another way to enjoy the levels if anything.

They should've made this game as a spin off or spiritual sequel or sidequel to Diddy Kong racing or something....or have some other characters from diddy kong racing get their own game. Yes, including tip top. I don't think I should call banjo kazooie nuts and bolts as a follow up or the third installment of the series at all, and I don't give a damn about the flashbacks this game showed. This shouldn't have been a follow up of banjo kazooie and tooie. because even if you aren't driving the vehicle, the open world levels have barely anything in it.

Just picked this up again off eBay, after selling my original copy in 2009, and my entire N64 collection. Repurchased an N64 last year, and enjoying it immensely! My brother and I got Diddy Kong Racing for Christmas 1997, and I purchased GoldenEye with my Christmas money shortly afterwards. Never beat DKR, but plan on completing it now. Since the gameplay and my adult sensibilities are mingling for the first time, I hear what you're saying about repetition fatigue and a feeling something is just missing. I love the game, but damn if it doesn't stress me out and piss me off to keep playing the same track a dozen times to complete the silver coin challenge or grand prix. Still love following Taj around until he starts singing along with the island theme song, haha!

On a positive note. I share this post from another channel who has done extensive research on Scorn. Scorn and Hellraiser commonalities: Scorn Guy - Frank Cotton from 1987's Hellraiser after absorbing his first victim and revealing his restordness to Julia. The Flying Head - The Chatterer from Hellraiser and Hellraiser Hellbound. The Piston Jacket Hammer Thing - Pseudo Cenobite Camerahead from Hellraiser Hell on Earth. The Crater Queen and The Initial Scorn Guy Parasite Hybridization - Possibly The Engineer from Hellraiser and Hellraiser Hellbound and possibly the tentacle from Hellraiser Hellbound. Interesting how that tentacle is parasitic in so many ways. The Brutes - The Chatterer Beast from Hellraiser IV Bloodline. Do keep in mind The Chatterer Beast is not from any animal since animals are sinless and have no desire for the pleasures of the human flesh. The Chatterer Beast is either The Original Chatterer reincarnated or a bunch of human beings literally mushed/mashed together/melded into becoming The Chatterer Beast. Lol kinda like when the Moldman and The Mold People are used to become reconstituted bio-organic fuel or into the beasts of Scorn World. The Mechanisms That Scorn Guy Sticks His Finger In - Frank Cotton and Julia Cotton jamming their fingers into their victims necks to absorb their lifeforce/blood/essence. *I'd like to point out the same process happened in 1982's The Thing towards the end of the movie when Blair corners Gary and jams his fingers into Garry's mouth area to absorb him* Scorn's creekiness and ambient sound design - Hellraiser's Lament Configuration after being fiddled with and the surrounding area starts to morph gateways to The Leviathan's Dimension. Doug Bradley's Pinhead and all time favorite line when he appears behind Kirsty - We Have Such Sights To Show You in the first Hellraiser movie. *The Scorn World Is Such Sights To Be Shown* Moldman's appearance mirrors the incomplete assimilation of the mangled bodies 1982's The Thing when they search the Norwegian Site Post. And might as well include The Siamese Twins Cenobites from Hellraiser Bloodline for good measure. The Ceiling Penis Worm Thing - The Tentacle from Hellraiser Hellbound that converts the doctor into a full fledged Cenobite. Scorn Genesis Wall - After Larry Cotton spills his blood on the attic floorboard, then afterwards you start to see the floorboards move violently, as if something is about to give birth. Which is Frank Cotton coming back to life from the Leviathan's Dimension and from the endless torture of the Cenobites. UA-cam it and you'll see what I mean. And I get it's a stretch but noteworthy nonetheless. The Grey Mold People - Frank Cotton's rebirth and seeing Julia in the attic. Especially when he says to her "Julia. It's me Frank. No. Don't look at me. I said don't look at me". The aesthetic design of Frank Cotton's resurrection is oh so obviously The Mold People in Scorn. And I'll keep adding more down the line in the future.

3/4 of the original vision was cut from the final release of the garbage 🗑 we ended up receiving. Edit from another channel post: The game is incomplete and three quarters of the original vision was completely removed. The fundamentals doings of the original game were worked as a watered-down lesser version. What we have is bullshit trash that they deem as Completed Art. Lmao yeah sure completed art my ass. Edit: Since it's incomplete. Whatever interpretation you come up with is going to be wrong and INCOMPLETE. Edit: It's like turning in your homework incomplete. The teacher is gonna be like "motherfucka this shit is incomplete, you failed". Edit: Since you're wrong on just about everything about Scorn let me fill you in on the correct details of this incomplete mess of a tragedy. Edit: Per the Scorn Art Book, Scorn is not set on an alien planet, it's Earth, date is unknown. Humanity has evolved/devolved into something other than secular humanistic values of today's contemporary culture/wisdom. The "babies" are not babies, they're known as The Humunculi. They are the architects and engineers of the Scorn world. Seeing not content with their symbiotic relationship with the denizens of Scorn, they chose rebellion and war broke out. Edit: Since the game is incomplete, it's like trying to do math problems without the numbers in place. Think about it, mathematics without numbers, uh huh doesn't workout so well doesn't it. Edit: You guys literally have no fucking clue what you're talking about. Scorn was supposed to be so much more but instead everyone who backed this game from day one got lied to, flimflam, bamboozled, hoodwinked and etcetera. They promised things with trailers leading up to the release and BAM! never included. Cut content for the uninitiated. Then these asshats have the nerve/gaul to say "10 Hours Worth of Gameplay" and "It's Completed Art". For real? Completed art? When you cut 3/4 of the original game and changed the fundamental doings of Scorn with lazy and piss poor representations of the original idea. That doesn't constitute as completed art. Look at their Art Book. "Certain things were just to weird. Even for Scorn". Ahha. Too weird even for Scorn. The entire premise was supposed to be "weird and out there". Something entirely new and fresh. But yeah. We got bamboozled HARD! Let this sink in and research the history of Scorn and the developer Ebb Software. You can google them and you'll see a number of interviews and behind the scenes commentaries and then there's their PR lady who was asked, "So what's your favorite location?" her answer "Oh the room with the two giant statues in the missionary position". Geewheez. I'm pretty sure people would've liked it as well and NOPE. They decided to remove. Ebb Software. Complete Asshats to The Tenth Degree. Edit: That may the case however Transhumanist Gamer made a better analysis of why much of the content was cut. Basically boiling down to the fundamental doings of gamer chose and interactions. For example the grenade launcher was severely watered-down and relegated to a specific boss fight. Even then the "fire power" of the grenade launcher was boiled down to an M80 Firecracker 🧨 going off in the middle of night. And it's original purpose was to deal and destroy the ceiling penis that causes disorientation/unwarranted death when looking in it's direct line of sight.

The purpose of V3's ending was to criticize the milking of a franchise and yet they throw a Danganronpa clone with the same patterns and clones of DR2 characters in a lazy way possible. I never understood the praise of Chapter 4, a filler chapter only made for shock value. It was just as bad as the next and previous chapters and the DLC remove the impact.

This game reminds me of how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle got so sick of writing Sherlock Holmes that he kills the character by throwing him off a cliff. A few years later Doyle returned to writing Sherlock Holmes and never addressed the contradiction. I think Doyle and Kodaka both realized that this is what they’re going to be known for and just embraced it. It’s a little repetitive but still very entertaining.

One of my favorite racing games, or games in general of all time. To me it isn't repetitive and it has enough variety in the adventure mode to keep me entertained. The fact there is an adventure mode is something different when talking about racing games where it was just mostly grand prix racing in most games. I like how that once you beat adventure mode, well you can do it again but with a twist and some added difficulty. I also enjoy collecting the bananas in races and really getting that max speed for your kart but other racers eat up the bananas too so you have to knock it out of them. Diddy Kong Racing is just one of those games I have a lot of nostalgia for and enjoy revisiting every now and then. I also enjoyed this fair critical review of the game.

I had no idea anyone else with OCD suffered from this. I have the exact same problem, but I'm obsessed with playing games optimally. Getting the right upgrades and finding missable stuff matters a lot to me.

No wonder people keep talking about this, this is a near revolutionary (for lack of a better word) game. Alot of this was only re-explored much later by other racing games, I never played, but I see this game deserves its accolades

Awesome seeing this series back, and where you're taking it from here. I really liked the section on the silver coin challenges and grand prix modes. While I haven't played DKR, I'm realizing I have a similar sentiment towards that type of challenge more broadly (I have similar gripes with CTR even as a CTR enthusiast) - and have always felt like grand prix modes are particularly suited to multiplayer. Making them single player completion requirements can feel a bit redundant, especially when the tracks don't change to adapt for a longer marathon structure. I'd be curious to see what that kind of change might look like... Also loved the ending. Your passion for Rare's creative output is always much appreciated.

I loved it in the old Sears kiosk in the 1990s and when I finally got a console in the 2010s, I snagged a cart for $5 and spent a couple weeks 100%ing it. I ended up doing the same with the DS version a few years later!

$5 for a retro game is a great deal, especially for a game as enjoyable as Diddy Kong Racing!

As someone who was a kid in that generation, and played both games, Diddy Kong Racing was by far the better racer when compared to Mario Kart 64. It just leaves Mario Kart in the dust. It had more features, more ways to play, a cuter/more whimsical and fun aesthetic, it had it all.

I love how much personality Diddy Kong Racing has. Compared to Mario Kart 64, it's no contest. Even just watching the cutscenes of the characters rocking out and dancing is a total joy.

@@PostMesmeric Personality is right! The whole game and all of the interactions, even the smallest ones like the character selection (as you pointed out in your video), were bursting with personality. You aren't wrong with your assessment that it is very hard and unforgiving though. It's kind of ironic - it is obvious that Diddy Kong Racing was intended for kids. But needless to say, it was more likely to make kids give up!

I'm surprised you didn't talk about T.T. (and Drumstick). I never ended up unlocking him as a kid and it's something I feel like I missed out on.

I did unlock those characters. Drumstick has a very interesting method of unlocking, one that plays to the game's charm. T.T. though...I mean, those time trials just got tiresome after a while.

I think I played this game for about 25min after looking forward to a new Banjo Kazooie game for years
